Eggman at the Whitney

eggleston

If you happen to be in NYC anytime soon, check out the William Eggleston retrospective, Democratic Camera at the Whitney , it’s pretty inspiring. Long known as the godfather of modern color photography, his pictures capture the beauty in the mundane suburban South of the 60’s and 70’s. The show is up until January 25th.

From Russia with Love

Why am I writing to you about a comic called Battlefields?

It’s not just because of my deep and lasting love for the work of Garth Ennis, creator of Preacher, among many other excellent comics.

It’s because The Night Witches , a three-part miniseries, is the story of an all-female fighter pilot squadron in the Soviet Union during World War II. And yes, it’s based on a true story.

These women were given substandard planes and flew only at night, and faced horrible treatment from their own side as well as the opposition, and yet they fought as bravely as any of the men.

We follow Anna, a pilot so tiny she needs to sit on a cushion to be able to see to fly her plane, as she heads into her first battle in this first issue, and right away we’re horrified, not just by the treatment of the women, but because Ennis takes care to show how bloody, pointless and cruel war really is. Russ Braun’s art conveys the horror, while rendering Anna cute and likable without being a typical sexy comics babe.

War stories may not be everyone’s cup of tea, but in today’s world I think it’s important to remember stories like these that have gone before, as well as the war stories that are still ongoing. We don’t have to glorify combat to remember the people who served, especially the ones whose stories have mostly been erased from history.

Happy belated Veterans’ Day.

Cindy Sherman’s Art Opening at Metro Pictures

I am soo excited because tonight is the opening of Cindy Sherman’s newest art exhibition since 2004! Her new art show consists of a series of color photographs about beauty, self-image and aging, and if her old work is any indication they should be very interesting. The opening will be held from 6:00-8:00 pm at Metro Pictures gallery in New York City, located on 519 W 24th St. If you can’t make it out tonight, the show will go on from November 15 until December 23. Check out the gallery website for more information! Image courtesy of Metro Pictures.

Theresa Honeywell’s Knitted Motorcycle Cozy

cozy

I recently discovered the work of artist Theresa Honeywell, who made this fabulous pink knitted motorcycle cozy! Honeywell combines traditionally female crafts like knitting and embroidery with supposedly ‘’macho-man'’ subjects such as biking, tattoos, fixing things with tools, etc. I like how Honeywell plays with gender stereotypes in a fun way and I have to say, if I ever went to someone’s house and they just casually had a motorcycle in their garage with a pink knitted cozy on it, I think I would be in paradise.  Check out Honeywell’s website to see more of her work, including lace tattoos!
